Copal Oro (Shorea javanica) - Dammar Resin, Alcohol-Free Liquid Extract (For External Use)

This is an alcohol-free glycerite of the dried dammar resin of Shorea javanica, a tree of the Dipterocarpaceae family from Indonesia, offered for external (topical) use. The golden resin is also called gold copal, gum damar or cat's eye damar.

  • Botanical name: Shorea javanica Koord. & Valeton (Dipterocarpaceae)
  • Botanical synonym: Anthoshorea javanica
  • Plant part: Dried resin (dammar oleoresin)
  • Also known as: Copal Oro, gold copal, dammar, gum damar, cat's eye damar, damar mata kucing
  • Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite, for external use
  • Other ingredients: 60% vegetable glycerin, 40% purified water
  • Origin: Resin responsibly sourced (Indonesia). Gluten free. Made in the USA.

How it is used: a traditional incense and varnish resin, offered here as a liquid extract for external, topical and aromatic use only - it is not for internal use. Please read the important safety information below before use.

Frequently Asked Questions about Copal Oro Extract
What is Copal Oro (Shorea javanica) dammar resin extract?
Copal Oro is a liquid extract of the dammar resin of Shorea javanica, a tree of the Dipterocarpaceae family from Indonesia. The golden resin is also called gold copal, gum damar or cat's eye damar (damar mata kucing). It is offered FOR EXTERNAL (topical and aromatic) USE ONLY - it is not for internal use. This version is an alcohol-free, vegetable-glycerin extract. Dammar is traditionally an incense and varnish resin. It is a different resin from the Bursera and Protium "copal" resins and from elephant tree (Bursera microphylla), and it is unrelated to Brucea javanica despite the shared species word "javanica." Please read the safety notes below before use.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and alcohol versions?
Both are external-use liquid extracts of the same Shorea javanica dammar resin; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version uses vegetable glycerin and purified water, a gentler carrier for topical use. The alcohol version is made with organic alcohol; it is flammable and should be kept away from flame, and it may sting on sensitive or broken skin. Choose the alcohol-free version for a milder feel on the skin; choose the alcohol version for a traditional resin tincture. Both are for external use only.
Is Copal Oro the same as other copal or damar?
Not exactly - "copal" is a general word for several fragrant tree resins, so the botanical name matters. Copal Oro here is the dammar resin of Shorea javanica (Dipterocarpaceae). The "copal" resins burned in Mexico and Central America usually come from Bursera or Protium trees (Burseraceae), a different family; elephant tree (Bursera microphylla), which we sell separately, is also sometimes called copal. And, importantly, our plant is not Brucea javanica - a completely different and toxic plant that only shares the species word "javanica." We label ours clearly as Shorea javanica dammar so it is not confused with any of these.
How do I use Copal Oro (for external use)?
For external use only - do not swallow it. Before wider use, patch-test: apply a small amount to a small area of skin and wait 24 hours; stop use if redness, itching or irritation appears. If tolerated, it can be applied sparingly to intact skin, or used in an aromatic way as a resin extract. Keep it away from the eyes, mouth, mucous membranes and broken skin. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light and out of reach of children.
Is Copal Oro right for everyone? Safety information (external use).
Please read this carefully. External use only: this product is for external (topical / aromatic) use and must not be swallowed - dammar is traditionally an incense and varnish resin and is not established for internal use. Skin: do a 24-hour patch test first; stop use if redness, itching, swelling or irritation develops, and do not apply to broken or irritated skin. Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth and mucous membranes. Pregnancy and nursing: if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Allergy: if you have a known resin or plant allergy, consult a practitioner first. Do not use it to self-treat any skin or medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
