Important safety information - please read before use

Dogwood bark has a long traditional history, but modern safety data is limited, so a few cautions apply.

  • Tannins: the bark is rich in tannins (astringent compounds), so large amounts can upset the stomach, and over time or in excess can reduce your absorption of iron and other minerals. Keep strictly to the suggested serving and to short-term use, and avoid taking it with meals or iron supplements.
  • Bark, not fruit: this product is made from the bark; the fruit (berries) of Cornus florida is not edible and should not be used.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: modern safety information is lacking, so do NOT use it during pregnancy without medical advice, and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding.
  • Contains alcohol. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Dogwood Extract
What is Dogwood (Cornus florida) bark extract?
Dogwood is a liquid extract of the dried bark of Cornus florida, the flowering dogwood or American dogwood, a small tree of the Cornaceae family famous for its spring blossoms. Historically the bark was used by Native Americans and early American herbalists. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. A couple of points matter: we use the bark, not the fruit (the bright red dogwood berries are not considered edible), and the bark is rich in tannins, which carries a dose caution. It should also not be confused with the traditional Chinese medicine "dogwood," Shan Zhu Yu, which is the fruit of a different species, Cornus officinalis. Please read the safety notes.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Cornus florida bark; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The bark inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is American dogwood the same as Shan Zhu Yu or other Cornus?
No - several plants are called "dogwood," so it helps to be clear. Ours is Cornus florida, the American flowering dogwood, and we use the bark. Shan Zhu Yu, the well-known dogwood of traditional Chinese medicine, is a different species - Cornus officinalis - and it is the fruit, not the bark, that is used there. Cornelian cherry is yet another, Cornus mas. So although they are all in the Cornus genus, they are different species and different plant parts with different traditional uses, and are not interchangeable. We label ours clearly as dogwood (Cornus florida) bark. (Cornus florida in the wild has also been affected by disease, so responsible, sustainable sourcing matters.)
How do I use Dogwood liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. It is astringent (drying) and tannin-rich, so dilute it well and do not exceed the suggested serving; keep to short-term use. To help protect iron levels, it is best not taken with meals or iron supplements. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water also softens the taste. Please read the safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
