Frequently Asked Questions about Coriander Extract
What is Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) seed extract?
Coriander is a liquid extract of the dried seed of Coriandrum sativum, a culinary herb of the carrot and parsley family (Apiaceae). The dried seed is the warm, citrusy spice known as coriander; in North America the fresh leaf of the same plant is called cilantro. Our product is made specifically from the SEED. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is a whole-seed liquid extract carrying the seed's natural spectrum of constituents, including the aromatic compounds linalool and pinene, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is sourced in Poland and each batch is gluten free.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Coriandrum sativum seed; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with roughly 60% vegetable glycerin and 40% purified water, giving it a naturally mild taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical.
Is coriander the same as cilantro?
They come from the same plant but they are different parts. Coriandrum sativum gives us both: in North America, the dried SEED is called "coriander" and the fresh LEAF is called "cilantro." They taste quite different - the seed is warm and citrusy, the leaf is bright and herbaceous - and they even differ chemically, so they are used differently in cooking and are not interchangeable. Our product here is the SEED extract. We also offer a separate Cilantro (leaf) extract, so if you specifically want the leaf, please see that product. We label each by common name and plant part (seed vs leaf) so there is no confusion between coriander seed and cilantro leaf.
How do I use Coriander seed liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. It has a warm, aromatic, citrusy spice flavor. Because it is alcohol free, this glycerite can be taken directly or added to a cool drink. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Coriander seed extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Coriander seed is a common food spice and is generally recognized as safe in food amounts, but a concentrated liquid extract should be kept to food-level amounts and not taken above the suggested serving. One point to know: coriander may lower blood sugar, so if you have diabetes or take blood-sugar-lowering medication, use caution and speak with your practitioner, as your blood sugar could go too low. Coriander is in the carrot family (Apiaceae), so if you are allergic to carrot, celery, cumin or fennel, or have birch or mugwort pollen-food sensitivity, you may react to it. Culinary amounts are considered fine in pregnancy, but it is best to avoid concentrated extracts during pregnancy and nursing, as there is limited safety data. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Store as directed on the label. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
