About Coriandrum sativum

Cilantro (Coriandrum sativum), the leaf of the coriander plant, is an annual of the carrot family, Apiaceae, native to the eastern Mediterranean and southwest Asia and grown as a kitchen herb from Mexico and India to China and Southeast Asia. It grows 30 to 60 centimeters with broad, lobed, parsley-like lower leaves and feathery upper leaves, topped in summer by small umbels of white to pale pink flowers. The round, ribbed, straw-colored fruits, sold as coriander seed, have a warm, sweet, citrusy flavor quite unlike the fresh leaf, whose pungent green taste reads as soapy to some people for genetic reasons. We extract the dried leaf and seed separately.

Tincture or alcohol-free drops?

Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
