Frequently Asked Questions about Dill Seed Extract
What is Dill Seed (Anethum graveolens) extract?
Dill is an annual of the carrot family (Apiaceae), botanically Anethum graveolens, grown widely across Europe, Asia and North America and familiar from pickling and from Scandinavian and Eastern European cooking. The plant gives two distinct culinary and herbal articles: the feathery leaf, sold as dill weed, and the flat oval seed. This product is made from the dried seed, which botanically is a schizocarp fruit. Its warm, slightly sharp aroma comes from a volatile oil containing carvone - simply a component of the raw material. Our extract is offered in two forms, an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture, both from ethically sourced material. This is a whole-seed liquid extract carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated compound and not dill essential oil, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Anethum graveolens seed; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the seed's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is this dill weed, and how does it differ from fennel or caraway?
Two clarifications. First, seed versus leaf: this product is the seed. Dill weed is the feathery green leaf of the same plant, a different article with a different aroma, and we sell it separately under its own name - so check the plant part on the page if you want one specifically. Second, the neighbours: dill belongs to the carrot family alongside a number of other seed spices we stock as separate products - fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), caraway (Carum carvi), coriander (Coriandrum sativum), cumin (Cuminum cyminum), anise (Pimpinella anisum) and ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi). They are related plants with quite different aromas and are not interchangeable. One further note on naming: what is sold as Indian dill is Anethum sowa, a related but distinct taxon, and this product is Anethum graveolens. We label the botanical name and plant part on every page so there is no confusion.
How do I use Dill Seed liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Dill Seed extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Dill is an everyday culinary spice, but a concentrated liquid extract is not the same as a pinch of seed in cooking, so do not exceed the suggested serving. Please note clearly: this product is an adult herbal supplement. It is not gripe water and it is not intended for infants or young children - if you are looking for a preparation for a baby, this is not that item, and you should speak to a paediatric professional. Because dill belongs to the carrot family, people sensitive to that family - celery, carrot, fennel, coriander, ajwain - may also react to it. Dill seed carries a traditional reputation as an emmenagogue and galactagogue, so if you are pregnant or nursing, discuss it with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
