Erythrina (Erythrina variegata) - Bark, Liquid Extract Tincture

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of the dried bark of Erythrina variegata, a coral tree of the pea family (Fabaceae). In traditional Chinese practice this bark is known as Hai Tong Pi (Cortex Erythrinae).

  • Botanical name: Erythrina variegata L. (coral tree, tiger's claw; Fabaceae)
  • Plant part: Dried bark
  • Also known as: Hai Tong Pi, coral tree bark, Cortex Erythrinae
  • Extract type: Alcohol tincture (cold maceration in organic alcohol)
  • Other ingredients: Organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Bark responsibly sourced from Thailand; prepared in the USA. Gluten free.

This is the bark (Hai Tong Pi), not the seeds. The bright red seeds of coral trees contain concentrated alkaloids and are considered toxic - they are not used here. Erythrina is also a large group of coral trees; we label ours clearly as Erythrina variegata bark. Please read the safety notes below.

Important safety information - please read before use

Erythrina bark naturally contains plant alkaloids of the erythrina group. A few cautions are important.

  • Erythrina alkaloids: at high, concentrated doses these can have curare-like effects on the muscles. They are found mainly in the seeds; in the bark they are present in low amounts and are poorly absorbed - so keep to the suggested serving and do not exceed it.
  • Bark, not seeds: this product uses only the bark; the toxic red seeds are not used.
  • Pregnancy: do NOT use during pregnancy.
  • Nursing: no safety data - avoid use or consult a qualified healthcare practitioner.
  • Medication / surgery: if you take any medication, especially muscle relaxants or sedatives, or are scheduled for surgery or anesthesia, talk to a qualified healthcare practitioner before use.
  • Contains alcohol. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Erythrina Extract
What is Erythrina (Erythrina variegata) bark extract?
Erythrina is a liquid extract of the dried bark of Erythrina variegata, a coral tree of the pea family (Fabaceae). In traditional Chinese practice the bark is known as Hai Tong Pi (Cortex Erythrinae). This tincture is cold-macerated in organic alcohol from bark responsibly sourced from Thailand and prepared in the USA. Please read the safety notes below - this is a bark extract that should be used sensibly.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Erythrina bark; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol, the classic cold-maceration method that yields a more concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is this the bark, and how is it different from the coral tree seeds?
This product is made only from the dried bark (Hai Tong Pi), which is the part used in traditional practice. It is not made from the seeds. The bright red seeds of coral trees contain concentrated alkaloids and are considered toxic, so they are not used here - only the bark. Erythrina is also a large group of coral trees, and the bark called Hai Tong Pi can come from Erythrina variegata (as here) or, regionally, from other bark sources. We label ours clearly as Erythrina variegata bark.
How do I use Erythrina liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is about 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of juice or water, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and read the safety information below before use.
Is Erythrina right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Erythrina bark naturally contains plant alkaloids of the erythrina group, which at high, concentrated doses can have curare-like effects on the muscles; these are found mainly in the seeds, and in the bark they are present in low amounts and are poorly absorbed, so keep to the suggested serving and do not exceed it. Do NOT use during pregnancy; if you are nursing, there is no safety data, so avoid use or consult a qualified healthcare practitioner. If you take any medication - especially muscle relaxants or sedatives, or if you are scheduled for surgery or anesthesia - talk to a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
