English Walnut (Juglans Regia), the Persian walnut, English walnut, Carpathian walnut, Madeira walnut, or especially in Great Britain, common walnut, is an Old World Walnut tree species native to the region stretching from the Balkans eastward to the Himalayas and southwest China. It is widely cultivated across Europe and the Caucasus.

It is the origin of cultivated varieties which produce the edible walnur, consumed around the world. China is the major commercial producer of walnuts.

Suggested use and dosage for adults: Shake well before use. 20-30 drops (1 ml., one full squeeze of dropper), up to 4 times a day or as directed by your practitioner. The best way to use liquid herbal tinctures is to put the suggested amount in a glass of water, tea, or juice and drink the entire contents. Tinctures can also be administered directly into the mouth without the assistance of water however some tinctures are unpalatable which is why most people prefer to dilute them into a beverage.

Importantly, this product is made from the LEAF of the tree, not from the edible walnut (the nut is a food; the leaf is the traditional herbal part). This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol at 48% by volume. It is a whole-leaf liquid extract carrying the leaf's natural spectrum of constituents, including tannins and the compound juglone, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Juglans regia leaf; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical.
Is this the walnut, or how does it differ from Black Walnut and Butternut?
This is the LEAF of the English walnut, not the walnut you eat - the nut is a food, while the leaf is the herbal part we extract here. It is also different from the other walnut-family products we sell. English Walnut is Juglans regia (the Persian/English walnut). Black Walnut is a different species, Juglans nigra - we offer a Black Walnut LEAF extract and a Black Walnut HULL extract. Butternut is yet another species, Juglans cinerea, from which we make an inner-bark extract. They are related trees but different species and different plant parts, and they are not interchangeable. This page is specifically the English walnut (Juglans regia) leaf. We label each by botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion between walnut leaf, walnut hull, butternut bark and the edible nut.
How do I use English Walnut leaf liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. It has an astringent, tannic taste that many people prefer to mix into juice. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and see the safety notes below. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is English Walnut leaf extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
English walnut leaf is considered low in toxicity at sensible doses, but its internal medicinal use is not well established, so keep to the suggested serving and use it short-term rather than continuously. A few specific points: walnut is a TREE NUT plant, so do not use this if you have a walnut or tree-nut allergy. The leaf is rich in tannins (astringent compounds) and contains juglone, so very high or prolonged doses are not advisable.
