Frequently Asked Questions about Evening Primrose Extract
What is Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis) herb extract?
Evening Primrose is a liquid extract of the dried aerial herb of Oenothera biennis, a North American biennial of the family Onagraceae. It is a tall wildflower whose pale-yellow blossoms open in the evening, which is how it earned its name. Our product is made from the above-ground herb - the leaves, stems and flowering tops. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is a whole-herb liquid extract carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents such as flavonoids, phenolic acids and tannins, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is grown in the USA and each batch is gluten free. Please note this is the aerial herb extract, which is a different preparation from evening primrose seed oil - see the next questions.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Oenothera biennis aerial herb; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a naturally mild taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical.
Is this evening primrose oil?
No, and this is the key distinction. Evening primrose oil is a pressed oil made from the tiny SEEDS of the plant, and it is valued for its gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid found in the seed oil. Our product is different: it is a water-and-glycerin or alcohol-based liquid extract of the AERIAL HERB - the leaves, stems and flowers - not the seed and not an oil. Because GLA is concentrated in the seed oil, the aerial herb extract does not provide GLA; instead it carries the herb's own constituents such as flavonoids, phenolic acids and tannins. So if you are specifically looking for the GLA seed oil in capsules, that is a separate type of product; what we offer here is the traditional aerial-herb liquid extract of Oenothera biennis. We label the plant part clearly (aerial herb) and the format (liquid extract) so there is no confusion with evening primrose seed oil.
How do I use Evening Primrose herb extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea or juice, up to three times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. It is best taken with a little food rather than on an empty stomach. Because it is alcohol free, this glycerite can be taken directly or added to a cool drink. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Evening Primrose herb extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
The evening primrose plant is edible and the aerial herb is generally well tolerated, but a concentrated liquid extract should be used sensibly and not taken above the suggested serving. Some people may notice mild stomach upset or a headache, which is why it is best taken with food rather than on an empty stomach. If you are pregnant or nursing, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, as its safety in pregnancy has not been established. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a practitioner first. Note that certain cautions often mentioned for evening primrose - such as those about blood thinners or surgery - relate to the concentrated seed oil (GLA), which is a different product from this aerial-herb extract. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
