Frequently Asked Questions about Evodia Extract
What is Evodia Fruit (Tetradium ruticarpum) extract?
Evodia is the fruit of Tetradium ruticarpum, a deciduous tree of the citrus family (Rutaceae) of eastern Asia. The genus was formerly called Evodia, so you will also see the synonym Evodia rutaecarpa (or Euodia ruticarpa); in Chinese herbal tradition the fruit is known as Wu Zhu Yu. The part used here is the dried fruit, sourced from Indonesia. The fruit naturally contains alkaloids including evodiamine and rutaecarpine - please read the safety information below, as the fruit is regarded as slightly toxic and these are its potent constituents. We offer the extract in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. This is a whole-fruit liquid extract; it is not isolated evodiamine or rutaecarpine, which are purified alkaloids sold separately. We label the botanical name (Tetradium ruticarpum) and the plant part (fruit) on every page.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Tetradium ruticarpum fruit; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent (48% alcohol by volume), together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both are taken by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. With either form, please read the safety information below - this is a herb to use only under professional guidance.
Is this isolated evodiamine or rutaecarpine?
No. This is a whole-fruit extract of Evodia (Tetradium ruticarpum), the Wu Zhu Yu of Chinese tradition. Evodiamine and rutaecarpine are individual alkaloids that occur in the fruit; they are sold separately as purified, concentrated ingredients. Our product is the whole fruit prepared as a liquid extract, not one of those isolated compounds. It is worth knowing that these alkaloids are also the fruit's potent and potentially toxic constituents, which is one reason this herb is used only in small amounts and short-term, under professional guidance (see the safety information). We print the botanical name and plant part on every page so the identity and form are clear.
How is Evodia used, and how much?
Shake well before use. The traditional suggested amount is 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, and it should be used only in small amounts, short-term, and as directed by a qualified practitioner. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the safety information below before use.
Safety: who should NOT use Evodia, and important cautions.
Evodia fruit (Wu Zhu Yu) is regarded as slightly toxic, so please take these cautions seriously. Use it only in small amounts and for short periods, and only under the guidance of a qualified traditional Chinese medicine or healthcare practitioner; it is not intended for self-treatment or long-term use. Excessive or prolonged use may affect the liver. The fruit's alkaloids can interact with medications and with caffeine through liver enzymes, so if you take any medication, consult your physician before use. Do not use this product during pregnancy or while nursing. Do not give it to children, and keep it out of their reach. Do not use it if you are allergic to any of the ingredients, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dry place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
