Elecampane (Inula Helenium) is a tall perennial plant of the daisy or aster family (Asteraceae), with large yellow, sunflower-like flowers. It is native to Europe and Asia and now also grows in North America. The part used is the root. The plant carries many old folk names, including horseheal, elfdock, and scabwort, and in traditional Chinese herbalism the root is known as Tu Mu Xiang. The root naturally contains inulin and sesquiterpene lactones such as alantolactone.

Inula helenium - Elecampane, the Horseheal Root

Elecampane (Inula helenium) is a striking, tall member of the daisy family, long familiar in European and Asian herb gardens under folk names such as horseheal and elfdock. Our Elecampane tincture captures the dried root in a concentrated, alcohol-based liquid extract.

About our Elecampane Tincture:

We start with quality elecampane root and use a classic, conventional alcohol extraction with organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, and water. It is a whole-root extract - not an isolate - carrying the plant's natural profile.

Suggested use: Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to four times a day, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Elecampane Extract
What is Elecampane (Inula helenium) root extract?
Elecampane is a tall perennial plant of the daisy or aster family (Asteraceae), botanically Inula helenium, with large yellow, sunflower-like flowers; it is native to Europe and Asia and now grows in North America too. The part used here is the root. The plant carries many old folk names, including horseheal, elfdock, and scabwort, and in traditional Chinese herbalism the root is known as Tu Mu Xiang. The root naturally contains inulin and sesquiterpene lactones such as alantolactone. Our extract is made from the dried root and offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-root liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Inula helenium root; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is elecampane the same as "wild sunflower," and which Inula is it?
Two clarifications about names. First, elecampane is sometimes called "wild sunflower" because of its large yellow flowers, but "wild sunflower" is much more commonly used for the true sunflowers (Helianthus species) and various other plants - so the name alone is ambiguous. Our product is specifically Inula helenium. Second, the genus Inula has several species used in herbalism: ours is Inula helenium (the root); there is also Inula racemosa (sometimes called Pushkarmool), and the Inula flower known as Xuan Fu Hua, which is a different part and species. Our product is specifically the root of Inula helenium (elecampane), and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion with Helianthus or with other Inula species.
How do I use Elecampane liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Elecampane extract right for everyone? Important safety information.
Elecampane is not right for everyone. Because it is in the daisy family (Asteraceae), people who are allergic to plants such as ragweed, daisies, marigolds, or chrysanthemums may also react to it, so use caution if you have these sensitivities. Taken in large amounts it can cause stomach upset, so use it only as directed and do not exceed the suggested serving. Do not use it during pregnancy. If you are nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Elecampane (Inula Helenium) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
