Frequently Asked Questions about Figwort Extract
What is Figwort Herb (Scrophularia nodosa) extract?
Figwort, botanically Scrophularia nodosa, is a perennial herb of the family Scrophulariaceae, also called common figwort, woodland figwort, or knotted figwort. The part used here is the aerial herb, sourced from the USA. You may see old traditional names for this plant, such as "throatwort" and "scrophula plant" - we mention these only as historical names, not as uses. We offer the extract in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, both taken by the drop. This is the western figwort, Scrophularia nodosa. It is a different species from Ningpo figwort (Scrophularia ningpoensis), known in Chinese tradition as Xuan Shen, which we sell separately and which uses the root rather than the herb. We label the botanical name (Scrophularia nodosa) and the plant part (herb) on every page. Please read the safety note below regarding the heart.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Scrophularia nodosa herb; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both are taken by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. With either form, please read the safety note below.
Is this the same as Ningpo Figwort or Xuan Shen?
No - they are different. This product is common (woodland) figwort, Scrophularia nodosa, and the part used is the aerial herb. Ningpo figwort is a different species, Scrophularia ningpoensis, known in Chinese herbal tradition as Xuan Shen, and it uses the root; we offer that as its own separate product. So although both are figworts in the genus Scrophularia, they are different species and different plant parts. This page is specifically Scrophularia nodosa, the herb. We print the botanical name and plant part on every page so the exact species and part are clear.
How do I use Figwort Herb liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and please read the safety note below before use.
Safety: the heart, and who should not use figwort.
Figwort naturally contains cardioactive compounds and can stimulate the heart, so this is an important safety point. If you have any heart condition - especially a rapid or irregular heartbeat - or if you take any heart medication such as cardiac glycosides (for example digoxin), do not use this product without the guidance of a qualified healthcare practitioner. Do not use it if you are pregnant or nursing without professional advice. Avoid prolonged or excessive use, and do not exceed the suggested serving. If you take any other medication or have a medical condition, consult your physician before use, and discontinue use if any adverse reaction occurs. Keep out of the reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dry place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Our Figwort (Scrophularia Nodosa) Herb is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
