Fringe tree (Chionanthus virginicus) is a small tree or a shrub that is native to the North American continent, but is predominantly found in the eastern United States from Tennessee to Pennsylvania, bearing white flowers with fringe-like petals in June, giving the plant its name. It is considered one of the continents most beautiful native plants. The white fringe of the flowers looks like ethereal cotton or white clouds. It has large leaves like those of the magnolia.*

Fringe tree is a small tree or large shrub of the olive family (Oleaceae), botanically Chionanthus virginicus, native to the eastern United States and found from Tennessee up to Pennsylvania. It is a relative of the olive, the lilac and the ash. In late spring it produces masses of drooping white flowers with narrow, ribbon-like petals, and that display is the source of its many common names: fringe tree, white fringetree, snowdrop tree, snowflower, old man's beard and, in the American South, grancy greybeard. The part used here is the dried bark, from wild-harvested material grown in the USA. Our extract is offered in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?

Both are liquid extracts of the same Chionanthus virginicus bark; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the bark's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Which fringe tree is this, and what about the name old man's beard?

Two points worth clearing up. First, the species: ours is Chionanthus virginicus, the American or white fringetree, native to the eastern United States. There is also a Chinese fringetree, Chionanthus retusus, which is widely planted as an ornamental - a different species, and not what this product is made from. Second, the folk names: fringe tree is sometimes called old man's beard, but so are several unrelated plants, including the lichen Usnea and species of Clematis. If you are looking specifically for one of those, this is not it. A note on searching, too: the word fringe on its own has nothing to do with the plant, so the botanical name Chionanthus virginicus is the reliable identifier. We label the botanical name and plant part on every page so there is no confusion.
