What is Gou Teng (Uncaria rhynchophylla) extract?
Gou Teng extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried hooked stem of Uncaria rhynchophylla, a climbing vine of the madder family (Rubiaceae) that grows curved, hook-like structures along its stems. In traditional Chinese herbalism this hooked stem is known as Gou Teng, which translates as hook vine, and in pharmacy references as Ramulus Uncariae cum Uncis. Our extract is made from the stem of the plant and is offered in two forms: a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, each prepared from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-stem liquid extract that carries the stem's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not an isolated or standardized single-compound product. We label the product by its botanical name and plant part so it is clear this is Uncaria rhynchophylla, the Chinese Gou Teng, and not another Uncaria species.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Uncaria rhynchophylla hooked stem; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, giving it a naturally sweet taste that suits those who avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is Gou Teng the same as cat's claw?
No - and this is a common and important point of confusion. Gou Teng is the hooked stem of Uncaria rhynchophylla, a Chinese species. The herb widely sold in the West as cat's claw is a different species, Uncaria tomentosa, a woody vine from the Amazon rainforest that is used for entirely different traditional purposes. Both belong to the genus Uncaria and both bear the curved hooks that give the group its name, but they are distinct plants from different parts of the world. A third relative, Uncaria gambir, is the source of a tannin-rich extract called gambir or catechu. Our product is specifically Uncaria rhynchophylla, the Chinese Gou Teng, made from its hooked stem. The naturally occurring alkaloids in the stem, such as rhynchophylline and isorhynchophylline, are simply part of its natural chemistry; our extract preserves the stem's own spectrum of constituents rather than concentrating any single isolated compound.
