Frequently Asked Questions about Ground Ivy Extract
What is Ground Ivy (Glechoma hederacea)?
Ground ivy is a low, creeping perennial of the mint family (Lamiaceae), botanically Glechoma hederacea - a relative of mint, sage and lemon balm. Despite the name it is not an ivy; the species name hederacea simply means ivy-like and refers to the rounded, scalloped leaves. Native to Europe and Asia, it is now widely naturalised across North America, where it also goes by creeping charlie. In herbal tradition it carries several older English names: alehoof, gill-over-the-ground, runaway robin and catsfoot. Alehoof is the most telling of these - the herb was used to clarify and flavour ale before hops became the standard. In Chinese herbal practice a related material is known as Lian Qian Cao. The part used here is the dried aerial herb. Our extract is offered in two forms, an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture. This is a whole-herb liquid extract, not an isolated compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Please read the safety section before use.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Glechoma hederacea herb; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the herb's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is this English ivy or poison ivy, and is it the same as creeping charlie?
Three plants share the word ivy and they are not related to one another, so this is worth stating plainly. Ours is Glechoma hederacea, a member of the mint family. English ivy is Hedera helix, in the family Araliaceae - a climbing evergreen, and a different plant altogether. Poison ivy is Toxicodendron radicans, in the family Anacardiaceae, the same family as cashew and mango - different again, and nothing to do with this product. The only thing the three have in common is the word, which in our case comes from leaf shape rather than kinship. As for creeping charlie: that is the same plant as ours, but the name belongs to a different context - ground ivy spreads readily through lawns and is treated as a weed across much of North America, so most searches for creeping charlie are about removing it from a garden. This product is the dried herb prepared as a liquid extract, not a garden treatment and not a plant for growing. We label the botanical name (Glechoma hederacea) and plant part on every page so there is no confusion.
How do I use Ground Ivy liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Ground Ivy extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Ground ivy is not right for everyone, and there is one point worth understanding. Its volatile oil contains a constituent called pulegone - the same compound that makes pennyroyal a herb to treat with care. In ground ivy pulegone occurs at low levels, so this is a reason for sensible caution rather than alarm, but it does shape the guidance. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Do not use this product during pregnancy, where ground ivy has a traditional reputation as an abortifacient, and avoid it while nursing. Avoid it if you have an existing kidney condition. Take care not to combine it with other herbs that also contain pulegone, such as pennyroyal, since that exposure adds up. One further note for households with animals: ground ivy is regarded as toxic to horses and other grazing livestock. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite should be kept refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
