Alfalfa (Medicago sativa), also called lucerne, is a deep-rooted perennial of the pea family, Fabaceae, native to the Caucasus, Iran, and Central Asia and now grown as a forage crop on every continent. It grows 30 to 90 centimeters with clover-like trifoliate leaves whose leaflets are toothed at the tip, clusters of small violet to blue-purple pea flowers, and distinctive seed pods coiled in a loose spiral. Its taproot can reach several meters down, which is why the crop stays green through dry summers. The sprouted seeds are a familiar salad garnish in the United States. We extract the dried leaf and sprouting seed separately.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
