Iron Care Alcohol-Free Drops
This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of five herbs extracted together in equal parts: four green leaves and one root from the traditional Western herbal cupboard. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal blend, not an iron mineral supplement - it does not supply a measured amount of iron. Please read the safety information below before use.
- Alfalfa, leaf - Medicago sativa leaf (Fabaceae)
- Dandelion, leaf - Taraxacum officinale leaf (Asteraceae) - the leaf, not the root
- Red raspberry, leaf - Rubus idaeus leaf (Rosaceae)
- Stinging nettle, leaf - Urtica dioica leaf (Urticaceae)
- Yellow dock, root - Rumex crispus root (Polygonaceae)

What is in the blend
- Alfalfa - the deep-rooted purple-flowered legume grown as fodder on every continent; the young green leaf is used, the same plant whose sprouts appear in salads.
- Dandelion - the familiar lawn weed; this blend uses the toothed green leaf, eaten as a bitter salad green in France and Italy. The root is a separate product.
- Red raspberry - the leaf of the raspberry cane, dried and used as a tea in European tradition for centuries; the fruit is not used here.
- Stinging nettle - the hedgerow herb whose young leaves lose their sting when dried or cooked; a traditional spring green.
- Yellow dock - the long yellow taproot of curly dock, a common roadside plant of the buckwheat family; bitter and astringent.
Why the alcohol-free drops
The dried leaves and root are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste that softens the grassy bitterness of the leaves.
What is a glycerite?
A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the herbs. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Use it in courses rather than continuously - yellow dock root can loosen the bowels with prolonged use. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.
Drops or tincture?
If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, the same five-herb blend is available as Iron Care Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

This is an herbal blend, not an iron supplement. Please read before use.
- See a doctor first: tiredness, weakness, pale skin or shortness of breath can have many causes and need a doctor and a blood test. Do not use this blend to self-treat them, or in place of iron your doctor has prescribed.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use without a qualified practitioner - raspberry leaf can act on the uterus, and yellow dock and nettle are traditionally avoided in pregnancy.
- Blood thinners: alfalfa and nettle are rich in vitamin K, which can change how warfarin works - consult your doctor if you take any blood thinner.
- Autoimmune conditions: do not use if you have lupus - alfalfa contains L-canavanine, which has been linked to flare-ups.
- Kidney stones and gout: yellow dock root contains oxalates - avoid if you have a history of kidney stones or gout.
- Bowel effect: yellow dock has a mild laxative action - reduce or stop if you develop loose stools, and do not use it continuously.
- Diuretics, blood pressure and blood sugar: dandelion and nettle increase urine output and may affect potassium, blood pressure and blood sugar - consult your doctor if you take diuretics, lithium, blood-pressure or diabetes medication.
- Hormone-sensitive conditions: alfalfa contains plant estrogens - consult your practitioner.
- Allergies: dandelion is a daisy-family (Asteraceae) plant, alfalfa is a legume, and nettle can cause skin sensitivity.
- Age: not for children.
