Period Relief Alcohol-Free Drops

This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of three herbs extracted together: the peppery berry of the Mediterranean chaste tree, the knotty root of the North American wild yam vine, and the leaf of alfalfa. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product and does not contain hormones - please read the safety information below before use, especially if you take hormonal contraceptives or prescription medicines.

  • Vitex (chaste tree), berry - Vitex agnus-castus berry (Lamiaceae)
  • Wild yam, root - Dioscorea villosa root (Dioscoreaceae)
  • Alfalfa, leaf - Medicago sativa leaf (Fabaceae)
  • Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite - liquid drops. Other ingredients: vegetable glycerin, purified water
  • Origin: Responsibly sourced, cultivated and wild-gathered botanicals. Gluten free. Made in the USA.

What is in the blend

  • Vitex berry - the small, dark, pepper-scented fruit of the chaste tree, a shrub of Mediterranean riverbanks with lilac flower spikes; the berries have been gathered in European herbalism for centuries.
  • Wild yam root - the twisted, woody root of a twining vine of eastern North American woodlands. It contains diosgenin, a plant compound chemists use as a laboratory starting material for hormones - but the human body cannot make that conversion, so wild yam is not a progesterone and this blend supplies no hormones.
  • Alfalfa leaf - the leaf of the deep-rooted forage legume with purple clover-like flowers; used here as the leaf, not the sprouts or seeds.

Why the alcohol-free drops

The three dried herbs are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste that softens the peppery bitterness of the herbs.

What is a glycerite?

A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the herbs. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.

Drops or tincture?

If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, the same three-herb blend is available as Period Relief Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Period Relief Alcohol-Free Drops?
Period Relief is a three-herb liquid blend: vitex berry, also called chaste tree berry (Vitex agnus-castus), wild yam root (Dioscorea villosa) and alfalfa leaf (Medicago sativa), extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, with no alcohol. Vitex is a Mediterranean shrub whose small peppery berries have been used in European herbalism for centuries; wild yam is a twining vine of eastern North America valued for its knotty root; alfalfa is the familiar deep-rooted forage legume, used here as the leaf. Each is also sold on its own. It is an herbal glycerite, not a capsule. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - vitex interacts with hormonal contraceptives and several prescription medicines.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free drops and the tincture?
Both contain the same three herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. These drops are a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water - no alcohol, a milder and naturally sweet taste that softens the peppery bitterness of the herbs, best kept refrigerated after opening. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
Is wild yam a natural progesterone? What is vitex?
No. Wild yam contains diosgenin, a plant compound that chemists use as a starting material to manufacture hormones in the laboratory, but the human body cannot make that conversion, so wild yam is not a progesterone and this blend does not supply hormones. Vitex is the dried berry of the chaste tree, a Mediterranean shrub - a different plant from the vitex used in some Asian traditions. Alfalfa here is the leaf, not the sprouts or seeds. This is a different formula from our Femenol and Menopause Care blends, which contain other herbs; all three are also available as single extracts.
How do I use Period Relief Drops?
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label. Keep out of reach of children.
