Bai He (Lilium brownii) is a bulbous perennial of the lily family, Liliaceae, native to much of China south of the Yellow River, from Sichuan and Guangxi to Zhejiang, growing on grassy slopes and open woodland. It stands 70 to 150 centimeters with scattered narrow leaves and, in summer, one to four large trumpet flowers up to 15 centimeters long, pure white inside and flushed purple-brown outside, with a sweet evening fragrance. The bulb is made of fleshy, overlapping, creamy-white scales 2 to 5 centimeters long; these scales are a vegetable in Chinese cooking, slightly sweet and starchy, stir-fried or cooked into sweet soups. We extract the dried bulb.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
