Frequently Asked Questions about Bai He Extract
What is Bai He, Lily Bulb (Lilium brownii)?
Bai He is the dried bulb of the lily Lilium brownii, a plant of the family Liliaceae. In traditional Chinese herbalism it is called Bai He, and in English it is simply the lily bulb. It is an edible bulb, eaten as a food in Chinese cooking, and the part used here is the dried bulb, not the flower. Our raw material is grown in China, where lily bulbs are a cultivated crop. The extract is offered in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. This is a whole-bulb liquid extract carrying the bulb's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Because "lily" and "bulb" cover several unrelated plants, please read the identity and safety notes below so you have the right one.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Lilium brownii bulb; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the bulb's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Which "lily" is this - and how does it differ from Bei Mu or Egyptian Lily?
This is Bai He, the bulb of a true lily, Lilium brownii. Because "lily" is used loosely, here are the distinctions. First, our plant is a true lily in the genus Lilium; the bulb is edible and used in cooking. Second, some other traditional "bulbs" are not lilies at all: Bei Mu and Chuan Bei Mu, which we also sell, are the bulbs of Fritillaria species (Fritillaria thunbergii and Fritillaria cirrhosa) - a different genus - and are their own separate products. Third, our "Egyptian Lily" is Nymphaea caerulea, a water lily, which despite the name is not a true lily either. And in the garden, "lily" is attached to plants such as lily of the valley (Convallaria, which is toxic), daylily (Hemerocallis) and peace lily (Spathiphyllum) - none of which are this plant. Our product is specifically the bulb of Lilium brownii. We label the botanical name and plant part on every page so there is no confusion.
How do I use Bai He liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Bai He extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Lily bulb is an edible food and is regarded as low in toxicity for people. One important note for pet owners: true lilies (Lilium species) are highly toxic to cats, in whom even small amounts can cause serious kidney harm, so keep this product away from cats. If you are pregnant, nursing, or taking any medications, consult your healthcare practitioner before use. It is not intended for young children. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and discontinue use and consult your practitioner if any adverse reaction occurs. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Bai He (Lilium Brownii) Bulb is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
