Black Pepper (Piper nigrum) is a woody perennial climbing vine of the pepper family, Piperaceae, native to the Malabar coast of southwestern India and now grown on poles and living trees across Vietnam, Indonesia, Brazil, and Sri Lanka; it is the most traded spice in the world. The vine climbs 4 to 10 meters by clinging roots, with glossy, heart-shaped, leathery leaves and slender hanging spikes of tiny flowers that develop into strings of 50 to 150 round drupes. Picked green and sun-dried, the fruits shrivel and blacken into peppercorns; ripened red and peeled, they give white pepper. The pungent heat comes from piperine. We extract the dried fruit.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
