Frequently Asked Questions about Black Pepper Extract
What is Black Pepper (Piper nigrum) extract?
Black pepper extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried fruit of Piper nigrum, black pepper, a flowering vine of the family Piperaceae whose dried fruit is the familiar peppercorn. Our extract is made specifically from the fruit and is offered in two forms: an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture, each prepared from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-fruit liquid extract that carries the peppercorn's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not an isolated or standardized single-compound product such as piperine. We label the product by its botanical name and plant part so it is clear this is Piper nigrum, distinct from isolated piperine, other pepper species, and the Capsicum peppers.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Piper nigrum fruit; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, which suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. Choose the alcohol-free glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is this piperine, long pepper, or a chili pepper?
None of those. Our product is a whole-fruit extract of black pepper (Piper nigrum). It is not isolated piperine - the single alkaloid from pepper that is sold on its own or as the branded ingredient BioPerine - because ours is the whole peppercorn, not a standardized single compound. It is also not long pepper (Piper longum, sometimes called pippali), which is a different species. And, importantly, black pepper is not the same as bell peppers, chili peppers, cayenne, or paprika: those are Capsicum species in the nightshade family, a completely different plant, even though they share the word pepper. Our black pepper is also different from white pepper (the same plant processed without its outer layer) and pink pepper (which comes from the Schinus tree). We label the product clearly by its botanical name so there is no confusion between whole black pepper, isolated piperine, long pepper, and the Capsicum peppers.
How do I use Black Pepper liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Please read the safety note below if you take medication.
Is Black Pepper extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Black pepper is a food-grade spice and is generally well tolerated, but a concentrated extract is stronger than culinary use. Black pepper naturally contains piperine, which can change how the body absorbs and processes certain medications and may raise their levels, so if you take any prescription medication, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before use. Taking more than the suggested amount may cause stomach or throat irritation, so it is best not to exceed the suggested serving size. It is best avoided in concentrated amounts during pregnancy and nursing unless supervised by a practitioner. Keep out of reach of children. Store as directed on the label. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
