Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) is a tall deciduous tree of the walnut family, Juglandaceae, native to the eastern and central United States, where it grows in rich bottomland soils and reaches 30-40 m. The dark, deeply furrowed bark, large pinnate leaves of 15-23 leaflets and round green fruits are distinctive; the thick husk around the nut blackens as it ripens and stains hands and cloth a deep brown, a traditional source of dye and ink. The hull has a bitter, strongly astringent taste. We extract the dried hull and the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
