Intestinal Cleanse Alcohol-Free Drops
This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of six ingredients extracted together in equal parts: a nut hull, a bulb, a leaf, a bark, a seed and a berry. It is a traditional herbal product for short courses only - several of its ingredients affect blood clotting, so please read the safety information below before use.
- Black walnut, hull - Juglans nigra green outer husk (Juglandaceae) - the hull, not the leaf
- Garlic, bulb - Allium sativum bulb (Amaryllidaceae)
- Papaya, leaf - Carica papaya leaf (Caricaceae)
- Pau d'arco, bark - Tabebuia impetiginosa inner bark (Bignoniaceae) - also called taheebo or lapacho
- Pumpkin, seed - Cucurbita pepo seed (Cucurbitaceae)
- Cranberry, berry - Vaccinium macrocarpon fruit (Ericaceae)

What is in the blend
- Black walnut hull - the thick green husk around the nut of the eastern American black walnut, which dries to a deep brown; it carries juglone and tannins, which is why the hull is used only in short courses.
- Garlic - the ordinary culinary bulb, one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world.
- Papaya leaf - the large, deeply lobed leaf of the tropical papaya tree; the leaf, not the fruit, is used.
- Pau d'arco - the inner bark of a tall South American trumpet tree with pink or purple blossoms, long used in Brazilian and Argentine tradition.
- Pumpkin seed - the flat green seed of the field pumpkin, the same seed eaten as a snack.
- Cranberry - the tart red berry of a low evergreen vine of North American bogs.
Why the alcohol-free drops
The six dried ingredients are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste that softens the bitterness and the garlic.
What is a glycerite?
A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the ingredients. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a glass of water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Use it for no more than two weeks at a time. Do not exceed the label serving. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.
Drops or tincture?
If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, the same six-ingredient blend is available as Intestinal Cleanse Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The ingredients and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
Important safety information - please read before use
Four of the ingredients in this blend can slow blood clotting, and the blend is for short courses only. Please read before use.
- Bleeding: pau d'arco, garlic, papaya leaf and black walnut can all slow blood clotting. Do not use with warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel or other blood thinners without your doctor, and stop use at least two weeks before scheduled surgery or dental work.
- Short courses only: black walnut hull and pau d'arco are traditionally limited to about two weeks at a time. Do not exceed the label serving, and stop if you develop nausea, vomiting or unusual bruising.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use - pau d'arco and papaya leaf can affect pregnancy, and black walnut hull has not been studied.
- Allergies: do not use if you are allergic to tree nuts (black walnut), latex or papaya, pumpkin seeds, or aspirin and salicylates (cranberry).
- HIV medicines: garlic can lower the blood level of saquinavir - consult your doctor if you take antiretrovirals.
- Blood sugar: papaya leaf may lower blood sugar - monitor if you take diabetes medication.
- Seizure disorders: use caution with black walnut hull.
- See a doctor: digestive symptoms that persist, blood in the stool, fever or weight loss need medical diagnosis. Do not use this or any herbal product in place of medical care.
- Age: not for children.
