Chuan Niu Xi (Cyathula officinalis), the Sichuan ox-knee, is a perennial of the amaranth family, Amaranthaceae, native to the mountains of Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guizhou in southwestern China, where it is grown at 1,500 meters and above. It stands 50 to 100 centimeters with angular, hairy stems whose swollen joints suggested the Chinese name, opposite, elliptic, pointed leaves, and dense, round, greenish-white flower heads in the upper leaf axils that harden into bristly burrs. The taproot is long and cylindrical, 30 to 60 centimeters, grey-brown and finely wrinkled outside, yellowish inside, and tastes sweet then slightly bitter. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
