Frequently Asked Questions about Chuan Niu Xi Extract
What is Chuan Niu Xi / Sichuan Ox-Knee (Cyathula officinalis) root extract?
Chuan Niu Xi is the Chinese name for the dried root of Cyathula officinalis, a plant of the amaranth family (Amaranthaceae); "niu xi" means "ox-knee," and "chuan" refers to Sichuan. In pharmacy the root is known as Radix Cyathulae. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite of the dried root. One point matters above all: Chuan Niu Xi is a strong blood-moving herb and is STRICTLY contraindicated in pregnancy - it has been used historically as an abortifacient. It should also be avoided by anyone with heavy menstrual bleeding. Please read the safety notes below carefully.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Cyathula officinalis root; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving a milder carrier for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The root inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Is Chuan Niu Xi the same as Huai Niu Xi (Achyranthes)?
No - they are two different "ox-knee" herbs, and the botanical name matters. Chuan Niu Xi is Cyathula officinalis (the Sichuan ox-knee), which we carry here. Huai Niu Xi is a different plant, Achyranthes bidentata (the Huai ox-knee), which we list separately. Both are called "niu xi" (ox-knee) and both are blood-moving herbs that are not for use in pregnancy, but they are different species with somewhat different traditional emphases - Chuan Niu Xi is regarded as more strongly blood-moving and downward-directing. We label ours clearly as Cyathula officinalis.
How do I use Chuan Niu Xi / Cyathula liquid extract?
Because this is a strong blood-moving herb, use it only under the guidance of a qualified practitioner, and keep to short-term use. Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Do NOT use it if you are pregnant. This alcohol-free glycerite has a milder carrier. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Chuan Niu Xi right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Pregnancy: Chuan Niu Xi is STRICTLY contraindicated in pregnancy - it is a strong blood-moving herb that stimulates the uterus and directs blood downward, and it has been used historically as an abortifacient, so do NOT use it during pregnancy at any stage, and avoid it while breastfeeding. Menstruation: do not use it if you have heavy menstrual bleeding. Bleeding and surgery: because it moves the blood, use caution if you take blood-thinning or antiplatelet medication, have a bleeding disorder, or are approaching surgery, and consult your practitioner. Keep to short-term use and ideally use it only under the guidance of a qualified practitioner. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or children. Store as directed on the label. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
