Cleavers (Galium aparine), also called goosegrass, stickywilly, or catchweed bedstraw, is a sprawling annual of the coffee family, Rubiaceae, native to Europe, North Africa, and Asia and now common in hedgerows, gardens, and field margins across North America. Its weak, square stems scramble 1 to 1.5 meters over other plants, and every surface is covered with tiny hooked bristles that make the whole plant cling to clothing and fur. The narrow leaves grow in whorls of six to eight, the flowers are minute, white, and four-petaled, and the fruits are paired, bristly, grey-green burrs. Fresh, it tastes green and faintly of cucumber. We extract the dried above-ground parts.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
