Gua Lou (Trichosanthes kirilowii), the Chinese snake gourd, is a perennial climbing vine of the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae, native to China, Korea and Japan. It climbs with tendrils, has lobed, hand-shaped leaves and white flowers whose petals are fringed with long, lace-like threads that open at night. The orange, egg-shaped fruit holds flat seeds in a sticky, dark pulp, and the large, starchy tuber is sold separately as tian hua fen. We extract the dried fruit and the dried root separately.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
