TRICHOSANTHES KIRILOWII

Trichosanthis (Trichosanthes Kirilowii) is a perennial flowering vine that belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family and is native to China. This herb is included into the list of the 50 fundamental herbs utilized in traditional Chinese medicine. Trichosanthes Kirilowii can grow up to 6 m in height. The stems have ridges and 2-3 claspers. The leaves are alternately arranged. The leaf blades are broad ovate-cordate, about 14 cm long, 3-5-lobed. The male flowers grow in racemes of 3-8 flowers. The female flowers are single and have a peduncle (about 6 cm long). The fruit is oval or globose, about 10 cm long, with orange flesh. The seeds are flat elliptic, about 1.5 cm long and 1.2 cm wide.
