Frequently Asked Questions about Gua Lou Extract
What is Trichosanthes Fruit (Gua Lou) extract?
Trichosanthes fruit extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried fruit of Trichosanthes kirilowii, a climbing plant of the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae). In traditional Chinese herbalism the fruit is called Gua Lou, and in pharmacy references it appears as Fructus Trichosanthis; in English the plant is known as Chinese snakegourd or Mongolian snakegourd. Our extract is made specifically from the fruit and is offered in two forms: a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, each prepared from ethically sourced, wild-harvested raw material. This is a whole-fruit liquid extract that carries the fruit's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not an isolated single-compound product and not made from the root. We label the product by its botanical name and plant part so it is clear this is the Gua Lou fruit of Trichosanthes kirilowii.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Trichosanthes kirilowii fruit; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water and is a highly concentrated preparation. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, which suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this the same as snake gourd, the root, or trichosanthin?
No to all three - it is specifically the fruit of Trichosanthes kirilowii. First, it is a different species from the culinary snake gourd vegetable eaten in many cuisines, which is usually Trichosanthes cucumerina; ours is the Chinese snakegourd (T. kirilowii) used in traditional Chinese herbalism. Second, it is a different plant part from the root: the root of the same plant is a separate herb known as Tian Hua Fen, so our fruit product (Gua Lou) should not be confused with root preparations. Third, it is a whole-fruit extract, not an isolated protein such as trichosanthin, which is a single purified compound studied on its own. We label the product clearly by its botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion between the medicinal fruit, the root, the culinary snake gourd, and isolated compounds.
How do I use Trichosanthes Fruit liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Trichosanthes Fruit extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Trichosanthes should not be used during pregnancy: plants in this genus are traditionally avoided by anyone who is pregnant or trying to conceive. It is also best avoided while nursing. Trichosanthes fruit is traditionally considered a cooling and moistening herb and in larger amounts may loosen the stool, so it is important not to exceed the suggested serving size, and it is best avoided by anyone with a sensitive or easily upset digestive system. If you take any prescription medication or are managing a health condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
