Psyllium here is the dark or French psyllium (Plantago afra, long sold as Plantago psyllium), an annual of the plantain family, Plantaginaceae, native to the Mediterranean basin and the Middle East and grown in southern France and Spain. Unlike the blond species it has a branched, leafy stem 10 to 50 cm tall with narrow opposite leaves and small flower heads on stalks from the leaf axils. The glossy seeds are dark brown to black and boat-shaped, and their husk swells into mucilage in water. We extract the dried husk.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
