Scouring Rush (Equisetum hyemale) is rough horsetail, an evergreen perennial of the horsetail family, Equisetaceae, a lineage older than the flowering plants, native across North America, Europe and northern Asia along stream banks and in wet, sandy woods. It forms colonies of unbranched, hollow, jointed dark green stems 60 to 150 cm tall, each node ringed by a small ashy-grey and black sheath of fused scale leaves. The stems are stiff with embedded silica, which made them a traditional abrasive for scouring pots and polishing wood. We extract the dried herb.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
