What is Scouring Rush (Equisetum hyemale) extract?
Scouring rush extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried aerial herb of Equisetum hyemale, a horsetail - an ancient non-flowering plant (division Pteridophyta) with hollow, ridged stems that are rich in silica. It is known by many names, including scouring rush, rough horsetail, Dutch rush, shave grass, snake grass, and, in traditional Chinese herbalism, Mu Zei. Our extract is made from the herb and is offered in two forms: a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, each prepared from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-herb liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not an isolated or standardized single compound. We label the product by its botanical name and plant part so it is clear this is Equisetum hyemale, distinct from other horsetail species.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Equisetum hyemale herb; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, which suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this the same as horsetail, and is it a true rush?
It is a horsetail, but a specific one, and it is not a true rush. Our plant is Equisetum hyemale, called scouring rush or rough horsetail. The more common horsetail sold as a supplement is a different species, Equisetum arvense, the field or common horsetail, so we label ours by its exact botanical name. It is also important that our plant is not marsh horsetail, Equisetum palustre, which is a toxic species, so quality raw material must be correctly identified and free of it. And despite the word rush in scouring rush, it is a horsetail, not a true rush (Juncus); the name comes from the plant's silica-rich, abrasive stems, which were historically used to scour pots and polish wood. We label the product clearly by botanical name so there is no confusion between Equisetum hyemale, field horsetail, marsh horsetail, and the true rushes.
How do I use Scouring Rush liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. The tincture and the alcohol-free glycerite are used the same way; choose the one that fits your preference.
Is Scouring Rush extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Horsetail naturally contains an enzyme called thiaminase, which can break down vitamin B1 (thiamine), so this extract is best used in moderation and not for prolonged periods, and it is best avoided by anyone with low thiamine status, including those with a history of heavy alcohol use. It is best not to exceed the suggested serving size. It is best avoided during pregnancy and nursing unless supervised by a practitioner, and it is not intended for children. If you take any prescription medication - including medicines that affect fluid balance - or are managing a kidney or heart condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use.
