Senna (Senna alexandrina) is Alexandrian or Tinnevelly senna, a small shrub of the legume family, Fabaceae, native to the dry regions of Egypt, Sudan, Arabia and India and cultivated commercially in southern India. It grows 0.5 to 2 meters tall with pinnate leaves of four to eight pairs of narrow, grey-green, pointed leaflets, and upright racemes of yellow flowers followed by flat, broad, slightly curved pods about 5 cm long that turn brown when ripe and hold six to ten seeds. We extract the dried leaf and pods separately.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
