What is Senna Pods (Senna alexandrina) extract?
Senna is a low shrub of the pea family (Fabaceae), botanically Senna alexandrina and also listed under the older synonyms Cassia angustifolia and Cassia acutifolia. It is native to the region of upper Egypt and Sudan and is cultivated commercially in India and elsewhere; the traditional trade name is Alexandrian senna. This product is made from the dried pods - the fruit - rather than the leaf. The pods naturally contain anthraquinone compounds known as sennosides; these are simply constituents of the raw material. Our extract is offered in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. This is a whole-pod liquid extract, not a standardized single-compound preparation, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Note that we also sell senna leaf as a separate product; this one is the pods.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Senna alexandrina pods; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the pods' constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this the leaf, and how does it relate to the other sennas and cassias?
This is the pod, not the leaf. We sell senna leaf as a separate product from the same species, Senna alexandrina, so if you specifically want the leaf, look for that item. The plant is also known by its synonym Cassia angustifolia, which is why you may see the same herb under different names. Beyond this species, the genus is easy to mix up with its relatives, and we carry several as their own products: Sicklepod, also called Jue Ming Zi, is Senna obtusifolia, a different species; Avaram is Cassia auriculata; and Chaksu is Cassia absus. Separately, the spice sold as cassia is Cinnamomum cassia, a type of cinnamon and an entirely different plant that only shares the word. We label the botanical name and plant part on every page so you can tell exactly which one you are buying.
