About Hamamelis virginiana

Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is a deciduous shrub or small tree of the witch hazel family, Hamamelidaceae, native to eastern North America from Nova Scotia to Florida and Texas, in moist woods and along stream banks. It reaches 3 to 6 meters with crooked, spreading branches and broad, oval leaves with wavy-toothed margins that turn yellow in autumn. Clusters of fragrant yellow flowers with four narrow, ribbon-like petals open in late autumn as the leaves fall, and the woody capsules explode the following year to fling the seeds several meters. We extract the dried bark and leaf separately.

Tincture or alcohol-free drops?

Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
