Witch hazel, botanically Hamamelis virginiana, is a deciduous North American shrub of the family Hamamelidaceae. The part used here is the leaf, wild-harvested in the USA, and this is an oral liquid extract taken by the drop and diluted in water, tea, or juice. The leaf is naturally high in tannins, including hamamelitannin - these are simply constituents of the raw material, and please read the safety note below. We offer the extract in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. Importantly, this is not the familiar topical witch hazel - the toner or astringent liquid that people dab on their skin - and it is not the witch hazel bark, which we sell as a separate product. What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?

Both are liquid extracts of the same Hamamelis virginiana leaf; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both are taken by the drop. Neither - this is the oral witch hazel LEAF extract. That topical use is different from this product. Ours is a liquid extract of the leaf that is taken internally by the drop, not applied to the skin.
