Frequently Asked Questions about Witch Hazel Extract
What is Witch Hazel Leaf (Hamamelis virginiana) extract?
Witch hazel, botanically Hamamelis virginiana, is a deciduous North American shrub of the family Hamamelidaceae. The part used here is the leaf, wild-harvested in the USA, and this is an oral liquid extract taken by the drop and diluted in water, tea, or juice. The leaf is naturally high in tannins, including hamamelitannin - these are simply constituents of the raw material, and please read the safety note below. We offer the extract in two forms, an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture. Importantly, this is not the familiar topical witch hazel - the toner or astringent liquid that people dab on their skin - and it is not the witch hazel bark, which we sell as a separate product. This is the leaf, taken internally. We label the botanical name (Hamamelis virginiana) and the plant part (leaf) on every page.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Hamamelis virginiana leaf; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. Both are taken by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life. With either form, please read the tannin safety note below.
Is this the topical witch hazel toner, or the bark?
Neither - this is the oral witch hazel LEAF extract. Most people know witch hazel as a topical product: the astringent liquid or toner applied to the skin, and the ingredient in some over-the-counter skin and anorectal products. That topical use is different from this product. Ours is a liquid extract of the leaf that is taken internally by the drop, not applied to the skin. It is also not the witch hazel bark; the bark is a different plant part, and we offer a separate Witch Hazel Bark product. So on this page you are looking at the leaf, for internal use. We print the botanical name (Hamamelis virginiana) and the plant part (leaf) on every page so the part and form are clear.
How do I use Witch Hazel Leaf liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Because the leaf is high in tannins, it is best taken with food rather than on an empty stomach. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and please read the safety note below.
Safety: tannins, who should take care, and storage.
Witch hazel leaf is naturally high in tannins, and concentrated tannins taken internally can cause stomach upset or nausea, especially on an empty stomach - so take this with food, do not exceed the suggested serving, and avoid prolonged high-dose internal use. If you are pregnant or nursing, or if you have a liver or kidney condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before internal use, or avoid it. If you take any medication or have any other medical condition, consult your physician before use. Keep out of the reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
