Frequently Asked Questions about Indian Sarsaparilla Extract
What is Indian Sarsaparilla (Hemidesmus indicus) root?
Indian Sarsaparilla is a slender, twining shrub native to South Asia, botanically Hemidesmus indicus, in the Apocynaceae family. In Ayurvedic tradition it is well known as Sariva or Anantmool, and its aromatic root is the part used here. This is a whole-root liquid extract, offered in two forms - an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture - each from carefully sourced raw material. One thing is important to know from the start: although it shares the name "sarsaparilla," Indian Sarsaparilla is a different plant from the true or Jamaican sarsaparilla (Smilax species), and it is not the sarsaparilla soft drink or root beer flavoring. This is a whole-root extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated single compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Hemidesmus indicus root; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life. See the safety note below.
Is this the same as regular sarsaparilla or the sarsaparilla soda?
No, and this is a very common and important point of confusion, because several different plants share the name "sarsaparilla." Our product is Indian Sarsaparilla, Hemidesmus indicus, which belongs to the Apocynaceae family and is known in Ayurveda as Sariva or Anantmool. This is a different plant from the true, Jamaican, or Mexican sarsaparilla, which comes from Smilax species in an entirely separate botanical family; for that reason Indian Sarsaparilla is sometimes called "false sarsaparilla." It is also not the sarsaparilla soft drink or root beer flavoring, which is a beverage rather than a herbal supplement. Our product is a liquid extract of the Hemidesmus indicus root, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion with Smilax sarsaparilla or with the soda.
How do I use Indian Sarsaparilla liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. See the safety note below. Drink the entire contents.
Is Indian Sarsaparilla extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Indian Sarsaparilla has a long history of traditional use and is generally well tolerated, but a few notes apply. If you are pregnant or nursing, it is best to consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before using a concentrated extract. Some people may notice mild stomach upset with concentrated herbal extracts, so do not exceed the suggested serving. Do not use if you are allergic to Indian Sarsaparilla. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, also consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Store as directed on the label. Discontinue use and consult your practitioner if any adverse reaction occurs. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
