Frequently Asked Questions about Bai Zhu Extract
What is Bai Zhu (Atractylodes macrocephala) extract?
Bai Zhu extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried rhizome of Atractylodes macrocephala, a perennial plant in the daisy family (Asteraceae). It is known in traditional Chinese herbalism as Bai Zhu and in English as white atractylodes, and it is one of the classic herbs of the Chinese materia medica. Our extract is made from the rhizome - the thickened underground stem, not the fine root - and is offered in two forms: a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, each prepared from ethically sourced, wild-harvested raw material. This is a whole-rhizome liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not an isolated or standardized single compound. We label the product by its botanical name and plant part so it is clear this is Atractylodes macrocephala, distinct from the other Atractylodes species.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, which suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is Bai Zhu the same as Cang Zhu or Atractylis?
No to both. Our product is Atractylodes macrocephala, called Bai Zhu, which means white atractylodes. Cang Zhu is a different species in the same genus, Atractylodes lancea, sometimes called black or grey atractylodes; it is a separate herb with its own traditional character and we sell it as its own product, so the two should be chosen deliberately rather than treated as interchangeable. It is also worth noting the spelling: the genus Atractylodes is not the same as Atractylis, which is a separate group of Mediterranean thistles entirely unrelated to the Chinese herbs. Our plant is Atractylodes macrocephala, and the part we use is the rhizome. We label the product clearly by botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion between Bai Zhu, Cang Zhu, and the unrelated genus Atractylis.
How do I use Bai Zhu liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. The tincture and the alcohol-free glycerite are used the same way; choose the one that fits your preference.
Is Bai Zhu extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
As with any concentrated herbal extract, it is best not to exceed the suggested serving size. Because Atractylodes belongs to the daisy family (Asteraceae), anyone with a known allergy to ragweed, chamomile, or other Asteraceae plants should be cautious. During pregnancy and nursing, use only under the supervision of a qualified practitioner. If you take any prescription medication or are managing a health condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, and it is wise to consult a practitioner trained in traditional Chinese herbs before combining it with other herbs. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala) Rhizome is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
