Frequently Asked Questions about Jie Geng Extract
What is Jie Geng / Balloon Flower (Platycodon grandiflorus) root extract?
Jie Geng is a liquid extract of the dried root of Platycodon grandiflorus, the balloon flower, a plant of the family Campanulaceae. Its root is known in traditional Chinese herbalism as Jie Geng and in Korea as doraji, where it is a well-known "medicine-food homology" plant eaten as a vegetable. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol at 48% by volume. It is a whole-root liquid extract carrying the root's natural constituents, including triterpene saponins such as platycodin D, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is responsibly sourced and each batch is gluten free. Please note this is the herbal root extract, different from the ornamental balloon flower grown in gardens and from doraji served as a food - see below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Platycodon grandiflorus root; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical.
Is this the same as the balloon flower in my garden, or doraji from the store?
It is the same plant species, Platycodon grandiflorus, but a different product. The balloon flower is a popular ornamental garden perennial grown for its balloon-like buds and star-shaped flowers; this product is made from the ROOT, which is the medicinal and edible part. In Korea that root is doraji, eaten as a seasoned vegetable (namul) or in kimchi. Our product is a liquid extract of the dried root, taken by the drop as an herbal supplement - it is not a garden plant and not a prepared food dish. We label it by botanical name (Platycodon grandiflorus) and plant part (root) so it is clear which form you are getting. If you are looking for seeds or plants for the garden, or for doraji as a food, this is not that.
How do I use Jie Geng / balloon-flower root liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and see the safety notes below. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Jie Geng / Platycodon extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Platycodon grandiflorus is a medicine-food-homology plant - its root (doraji) is eaten as a vegetable in Korea - and it is considered low in toxicity. One point to note: the root is rich in triterpene saponins, which in large amounts can irritate the stomach, so keep to the suggested serving and do not exceed it. Human clinical data on concentrated extracts is limited, so use it short-term rather than continuously. As a general precaution with any concentrated extract, consult a healthcare practitioner before use during pregnancy or nursing, and if you take any medication or have a medical condition. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains 48% alcohol by volume and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
