Kidney Formula Tincture
This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of three herbs extracted together in equal parts: a berry, a leaf and a seed, all familiar food-and-herb plants. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product - please read the safety information below before use.
- Cranberry, berry - Vaccinium macrocarpon fruit (Ericaceae)
- Green tea, leaf - Camellia sinensis leaf (Theaceae) - contains natural caffeine
- Milk thistle, seed - Silybum marianum seed (Asteraceae) - the seed, not the leaf
- Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
- Origin: Responsibly sourced, cultivated botanicals. Gluten free. Made in the USA.
What is in the blend
- Cranberry - the tart red berry of a low evergreen vine of North American bogs, the same fruit that goes into juice and sauce; it is naturally rich in organic acids and tannins.
- Green tea - the unfermented leaf of the tea plant, dried without oxidation so it keeps its green color and its catechins; it also carries the caffeine of ordinary tea.
- Milk thistle - the small, hard seeds of a tall purple-flowered thistle of the Mediterranean, named for the white veins on its leaves; the seed is the part used in most milk thistle products.
Why a tincture
The dried berry, leaf and seed are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method, and a good match for the resinous compounds of milk thistle seed. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a tart, astringent taste, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a glass of water and drink it with food, up to the frequency shown on the label - not on an empty stomach (see the safety note on green tea). Drink plenty of water through the day. Do not exceed the label serving. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.
Tincture or drops?
If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same three-herb blend is available as Kidney Formula Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
Important safety information - please read before use
Please read before use.
- See a doctor: pain in the side or lower back, blood in the urine, swelling, fever or changes in urination need medical diagnosis. See a doctor promptly, and do not use this or any herbal product in place of medical care.
- Liver: concentrated green tea extracts have been linked to rare cases of liver injury, especially when taken on an empty stomach or while dieting. Take this blend with food and stay within the label serving. Stop and see a doctor if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine or unusual fatigue.
- Kidney stones: if you have a history of kidney stones, consult your doctor before use - cranberry contains oxalates.
- Blood thinners: cranberry in large amounts and milk thistle may change how warfarin and some other medicines work. Consult your doctor if you take warfarin, diazepam or medicines with a narrow dose range.
- Caffeine: green tea leaf contains caffeine - avoid if you are sensitive to it or have a heart rhythm condition, and do not take it in the evening.
- Blood sugar: milk thistle may lower blood sugar - monitor if you take diabetes medication.
- Allergies: milk thistle is a daisy-family (Asteraceae) plant - avoid if you are allergic to ragweed, daisies or chrysanthemums. Avoid cranberry if you are allergic to aspirin or salicylates.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
- Iron: take iron supplements two hours apart - tea and cranberry reduce iron absorption.
- Age: not for children.
- Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.
