Frequently Asked Questions about Lesser Galangal Extract
What is Lesser Galangal (Alpinia officinarum) rhizome extract?
Lesser Galangal is a liquid extract of the dried rhizome of Alpinia officinarum, a member of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) known as lesser galangal or Chinese galangal, and in traditional Chinese herbalism as Gao Liang Jiang. It is a warm, pungent, ginger-like rhizome spice. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is a whole-rhizome liquid extract carrying the rhizome's natural spectrum of constituents, including aromatic volatile oils and flavonoids such as galangin, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is responsibly sourced from Thailand and each batch is gluten free. Please note this is lesser galangal (Alpinia officinarum), which is different from the greater galangal used as the culinary "Thai ginger" - see below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Alpinia officinarum rhizome; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical.
How is Lesser Galangal different from regular galangal and your other Alpinia products?
Lesser Galangal is Alpinia officinarum, the smaller Chinese galangal rhizome (Gao Liang Jiang). It is different from the galangal most people cook with: greater galangal, Alpinia galanga, is the larger rhizome sold as the culinary "Thai ginger" used in tom yum and curries - we offer that separately as our Galangal (Alpinia galanga) product. We also carry two other members of the same genus: Cao Dou Kou (Alpinia katsumadai), which is a seed, and Black Cardamon (Alpinia oxyphylla), which is a fruit. These are related plants in the ginger family but different species and, for Cao Dou Kou and Black Cardamon, different plant parts. This page is specifically the lesser galangal (Alpinia officinarum) rhizome. We label each by botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion between lesser galangal, greater galangal and the other Alpinia extracts.
How do I use Lesser Galangal rhizome liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. It has a warm, pungent, ginger-like taste that many people prefer to mix into juice. Because it is alcohol free, this glycerite can be taken directly or added to a cool drink. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and see the safety notes below. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Lesser Galangal extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Lesser galangal is a culinary-adjacent spice in the ginger family and is considered low in toxicity at sensible doses; no firm contraindications have been identified, but human clinical data is limited, so keep to the suggested serving and use it short-term rather than continuously. A few specific points: the rhizome contains eugenol and has shown blood-thinning (anticoagulant) activity in studies, so if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet medication, or are preparing for surgery, consult your healthcare practitioner first. Avoid use during pregnancy and nursing, as safety data is lacking. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
