Liverwort (Radula Marginata) Liquid Extract Tincture

  • Alcohol-based liquid extract of the dried whole herb (thallus) of Radula marginata, a bryophyte liverwort native to New Zealand.
  • Menstruum: organic alcohol (48% by volume), vegetable glycerin, crystal clear water. Gluten free.
  • Responsibly sourced raw material. Origin: New Zealand.
  • Whole-herb liquid extract, taken by the drop.

Botanical Identity

  • Botanical name: Radula marginata (division Marchantiophyta - the liverworts).
  • Type: a bryophyte (liverwort), not a flowering plant.
  • Not the same as our other "Liverwort" product, Hepatica americana, a different plant that shares the common name.
  • "Liverwort" is a shared common name; we label this one by its botanical name, Radula marginata, and its New Zealand origin.

Safety information - please read before use

This botanical may be mildly psychoactive. Radula marginata naturally contains a compound that can act on the body's cannabinoid (CB1) receptors and may have mild psychoactive potential. Human safety and pharmacological data are limited, and its effects on organs such as the liver and kidneys are not established.

  • Because of possible psychoactivity, do not use before or while driving or operating machinery.
  • Do not combine with additional alcohol or with any medication or substance that affects the central nervous system. (This tincture itself contains 48% alcohol by volume.)
  • Do not use if pregnant or nursing.
  • Not for use by children. Keep out of reach of children.
  • If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use.
  • Keep to the suggested serving; do not exceed it. Discontinue and seek advice if you feel unwell.

Suggested use: Adults, 20 to 30 drops (about 1 ml) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by a healthcare practitioner. Shake well before use. Store in a cool, dark place.

Frequently Asked Questions about Liverwort Extract
What is Liverwort (Radula marginata) herb extract?
Liverwort is a liquid extract of the dried whole herb of Radula marginata, a small non-flowering plant (a bryophyte, in the liverwort division Marchantiophyta) native to New Zealand. Because it is a liverwort rather than a flowering plant, the material used is the whole thallus (the flat, leaf-like body of the plant) rather than a leaf, root or seed. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol at 48% by volume. It is a whole-herb liquid extract of responsibly sourced New Zealand material, and each batch is gluten free. Please note the important safety information below before use, and note that "liverwort" is a common name shared by several unrelated plants - this one is specifically Radula marginata (see below).
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Radula marginata herb; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please read the safety notes below for both forms.
Is this the same as your other Liverwort (Hepatica) product?
No. "Liverwort" is an old common name shared by several completely different plants, so it is important to check the botanical name. This product is Radula marginata, a bryophyte (a true liverwort in the division Marchantiophyta) from New Zealand. Our other "Liverwort" product is Hepatica americana, a flowering plant in the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae) traditionally called American liverwort - a different species entirely, sold on its own page. They are not interchangeable. The historical name "liverwort" comes from the old idea that a liver-shaped leaf signaled a use for the liver; we do not make any liver or other health claims for this product. We label this page by its botanical name, Radula marginata, and its New Zealand origin so it is not confused with the Hepatica product or with other bryophytes such as Marchantia.
How do I use Liverwort (Radula marginata) liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the safety information below carefully before use, as it is important for this particular botanical. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Liverwort (Radula marginata) right for everyone? Important safety information.
Please read this carefully. Radula marginata naturally contains a compound (a bibenzyl cannabinoid) that can act on the body's cannabinoid (CB1) receptors and may have mild psychoactive potential. Human safety and pharmacological data on this plant are limited, and its effects on organ systems such as the liver and kidneys are not established. For these reasons: do NOT use before or while driving or operating machinery; do NOT combine it with additional alcohol or with any medication or substance that affects the central nervous system (this tincture itself contains 48% alcohol by volume); do NOT use during pregnancy or nursing; and it is not for use by children. If you take any medication or have any medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep strictly to the suggested serving, do not exceed it, and discontinue use and seek advice if you feel unwell. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Liverwort (Radula Marginata) Herb is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
