Longan (Euphoria Longan) also known as dragon’s eye, is a middle-sized tropical or subtropical fruit tree which belongs to the soapberry (Sapindaceae) family. It originates from Southern Asia and is generally cultivated for its eatable fruit. The plant can grow up to 14 m in height. The leaves are oblongish and alternately arranged. The fruits grow in clusters. They have an orange tawny thin hairy peel and sweet mucous flesh. The seed is quite big and dark with a white spot which makes it similar to an eye.*

The fruit is often called "dragon eye" because a peeled longan, with its dark seed showing through the translucent flesh, resembles an eyeball. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol at 48% by volume, made specifically from the fruit PEEL, also called the pericarp. It is a whole-peel liquid extract carrying the natural spectrum of the pericarp's constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?

Both are liquid extracts of the same Dimocarpus longan fruit peel; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical.

Is this the longan fruit flesh (Long Yan Rou)?

No - this is an important distinction of plant part. The famous edible part of longan is the sweet, translucent inner flesh, called the aril, which in Chinese medicine is known as Long Yan Rou, or "dragon eye flesh." Our product is different: it is made from the PEEL (the outer skin, or pericarp) of the fruit, not the sweet aril flesh and not the seed. The peel is actually the most polyphenol-rich part of the longan fruit, carrying compounds such as gallic acid, ellagic acid and epicatechin, whereas the aril is the sweet food portion. So if you are looking for the dried longan flesh sold as a food or as Long Yan Rou, that is a different preparation; what we offer here is the peel extract of Dimocarpus longan. We label the botanical name and the plant part (peel) clearly so there is no confusion with the aril, the seed, or the whole fruit.

How do I use Longan peel liquid extract?

Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to a few times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
