This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of two Brazilian tree barks extracted together in equal parts. The blend is named for its two ingredients; both barks are also sold on their own. It is a traditional herbal product - please read the safety information below before use.

What is in the blend
- Muira puama - a small tree of the Amazon basin; the bark and root have a long history in Brazilian herbalism. Two different trees share this common name: this blend uses Ptychopetalum olacoides, not the northeastern Croton echioides, which we sell separately.
- Catuaba - the bark of a small flowering tree of northern Brazil. The name catuaba is applied to several unrelated Brazilian trees, and some commercial catuaba has been found to be a different bark from the one on the label, so careful sourcing of the correct species matters. Although it belongs to the same genus as the coca plant, it is a different species and contains no cocaine alkaloids.
Why the alcohol-free drops
The dried barks are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste that softens the bitterness of the barks.
What is a glycerite?
A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the barks. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Both barks are traditionally regarded as mildly stimulating, so many people prefer to take the blend earlier in the day. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.
Drops or tincture?
If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, the same two-bark blend is available as Muira Puama and Catuaba Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The barks and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

- Stimulation: both barks are traditionally regarded as mildly stimulating, and muira puama may raise blood pressure. Use caution if you have a heart condition, high blood pressure or anxiety, and do not combine with caffeine or other stimulants.
- Limited research: neither bark has been studied in depth. Keep to the label serving and to short-term use. Stop if you notice nervousness, restlessness, palpitations or stomach upset.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
- Identity: several unrelated Brazilian trees are sold as catuaba, and some commercial catuaba has been found adulterated. Buy from a source that identifies its bark.
- Age: not for children.
