Its striking feature is the hooded blue-violet flowers that bloom atop slender, square stems during the summer months. The plant's appearance is reminiscent of small medieval helmets, which is actually the inspiration behind its name—'skullcap'. This perennial herb thrives in marshy environments, making it a delightful sight along the edges of ponds and streams. With its vibrant flowers and preference for damp soils, Marsh Skullcap not only beautifies its natural habitat but also supports local wildlife, offering nectar to bees and butterflies. Its allure and role in the ecosystem make it a fascinating plant for nature enthusiasts and casual gardeners alike.

Frequently Asked Questions about Marsh Skullcap Extract
What is Marsh Skullcap (Scutellaria galericulata) extract?
Marsh Skullcap is a liquid extract of the dried root of Scutellaria galericulata, a small wildflower of the mint family (Lamiaceae) that grows in wetlands and marshy ground across North America and Europe. It is named for its little hooded, blue-violet flowers and is also called common skullcap or hooded skullcap. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol at 48% by volume together with vegetable glycerin and water. It is a whole-root liquid extract carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized compound. The raw material is sourced in the USA from reputable, correctly identified, germander-free stock, and each batch is gluten free. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below before use.
What is the difference between the tincture and the alcohol-free drops?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Scutellaria galericulata root; only the extraction liquid differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, with a naturally mild taste, for those who avoid alcohol. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
How is Marsh Skullcap different from other skullcaps, and which plant part is this?
All skullcaps belong to the genus Scutellaria, but they are different species and often different plant parts. This product is the root of Scutellaria galericulata, marsh skullcap. We also offer American Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora, the aerial herb), Chinese Skullcap or Huang Qin (Scutellaria baicalensis, the root) and Scutellaria barbata as Ban Zhi Lian and Barbed Skullcap. Western skullcaps are more often sold as the aerial herb, so check the plant part on the label when comparing products. When most references say simply skullcap, they mean the American species, not marsh skullcap. We label the botanical name and plant part on every page.
How do I use Marsh Skullcap Tincture?
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Because skullcap can cause drowsiness, do not take it before driving or activities that need full alertness. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight, and keep out of reach of children.
Is Marsh Skullcap safe? Safety information.
Please read carefully. Drowsiness: skullcap can cause drowsiness - do not drive or operate machinery after taking it, and do not combine it with alcohol, sleeping pills, benzodiazepines or other products that slow the nervous system. Quality: in the herb trade, skullcap has a documented history of adulteration with germander (Teucrium species), which can harm the liver; we source correctly identified, germander-free Scutellaria galericulata. Stop and see a doctor if you notice dark urine, yellowing skin or eyes, or stomach pain. Pregnancy and nursing: do not use. Not for children. This tincture contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
