Frequently Asked Questions about Mistletoe Extract
What is mistletoe herb extract used for?
Mistletoe herb extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried herb of Viscum album, a hemiparasitic evergreen shrub in the family Santalaceae native to temperate Europe and western Asia, growing on the branches of host trees including oak, apple, poplar, linden, and pine. The dried herb is a source of mistletoe lectins (ML-I, ML-II, and ML-III), galactose-binding lectins that are the characteristic proteins of Viscum album; viscotoxins A1, A2, A3, and B, small cysteine-rich polypeptides of the thionin family; quercetin and kaempferol, flavonoid glycosides; and oleanolic acid, a pentacyclic triterpenoid. Viscum album has been used in European herbal traditions for centuries; the Druidic practice of ceremonially harvesting mistletoe from oak trees was documented by Pliny the Elder in Naturalis Historia (circa 77 CE). As a dietary supplement, mistletoe herb extract is used to support general wellness. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What is the difference between mistletoe drops and mistletoe tincture?
HawaiiPharm offers mistletoe herb in two liquid formats. The alcohol-free glycerite drops use vegetable glycerin and purified water as solvents, making them suitable for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The mistletoe herb tincture uses grain alcohol as the primary solvent, which is the traditional method of herbal extraction. Both are made from dried Viscum album herb and are liquid herbal extracts, offering a different format from mistletoe capsule and tablet preparations.
What is Viscum album?
Viscum album, commonly known as European mistletoe or white-berried mistletoe, is a hemiparasitic evergreen shrub in the family Santalaceae native to temperate Europe and western Asia, where it grows attached to the branches of host trees from which it extracts water and minerals while simultaneously conducting its own photosynthesis through its green stems and leaves. The plant forms characteristic spherical masses on host branches, reaching 30-100 cm in diameter, with paired leathery oblong yellow-green leaves, very small yellow-green flowers, and distinctive white, sticky berries that ripen in winter. The genus name Viscum is the classical Latin word for mistletoe, derived from the same Indo-European root as the English word viscous, referring to the intensely sticky pulp of the berries, which was historically used to make birdlime - a sticky substance spread on branches to trap small birds. The species epithet album means white in Latin, referring to the white berries. The English common name mistletoe derives from Old English misteltan: mistel of uncertain Germanic origin, possibly cognate with Old High German mist (dung), reflecting the primary means of seed dispersal - birds eating the berries deposit seeds in their droppings on tree branches, precisely where the plant germinates - and tan, meaning twig. The family Santalaceae also includes sandalwood (Santalum album). HawaiiPharm's mistletoe herb tincture is made from dried Viscum album herb.
How do I use mistletoe liquid extract?
The suggested use is 20-30 drops taken three times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Add the drops to water, tea, or juice before consuming. Shake the bottle well before each use, as natural separation may occur. Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Do not exceed the suggested serving size unless directed by a healthcare professional.
Are there any precautions when taking mistletoe supplement?
Consult a healthcare provider before use if you take medications for blood pressure or cardiovascular conditions, as Viscum album has documented hypotensive activity and may affect heart rate and blood pressure. Consult a healthcare provider before use if you take immunosuppressant medications or have an autoimmune condition, as mistletoe lectins are immunologically active compounds. Consult a healthcare provider before use if you are pregnant or nursing, as the safety of Viscum album herb extract during pregnancy has not been established. Do not exceed the recommended serving size; Viscum album preparations contain lectins and viscotoxins that are potent at higher concentrations. Do not give to children without medical supervision. Note: the berries of the whole mistletoe plant are toxic and should not be consumed; if accidental ingestion of mistletoe berries occurs, contact Poison Control immediately. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
