Frequently Asked Questions about Mu Dan Pi Extract
What is Tree Peony Bark (Mu Dan Pi) extract?
Tree peony bark extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried root bark of Paeonia suffruticosa, the tree peony, a woody plant of the family Paeoniaceae. In traditional Chinese herbalism this root bark is called Mu Dan Pi, and in pharmacy references it appears as Moutan Cortex (Cortex Moutan). Our extract is made specifically from the root bark and is offered in two forms: a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, each prepared from ethically sourced, wild-harvested raw material. This is a whole-bark liquid extract that carries the bark's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not an isolated single-compound product such as paeonol. We label the product by its botanical name and plant part so it is clear this is the Moutan root bark, distinct from the ornamental flower and from other peony herbs.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Paeonia suffruticosa root bark; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, which suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this the peony flower, peony root, or paeonol?
None of those - it is the root bark. Paeonia suffruticosa is widely grown as an ornamental tree peony prized for its large flowers, but our product is made from the plant's dried ROOT BARK, known in traditional Chinese herbalism as Mu Dan Pi and in pharmacy as Moutan Cortex. It is a different plant part from the flower grown in gardens. It is also a different herb from peony root: white peony root (Bai Shao) and red peony root (Chi Shao) come from the roots of Paeonia lactiflora and are their own distinct preparations, whereas Mu Dan Pi is the root bark of Paeonia suffruticosa. And it is a whole-bark extract, not an isolated constituent such as paeonol. We label the product clearly by its botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion between the ornamental flower, peony root, and the Moutan root bark.
How do I use Tree Peony Bark liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Tree Peony Bark extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Tree peony bark is traditionally regarded as a herb that moves the blood, so it is best avoided during pregnancy and while nursing. For the same reason, if you take blood-thinning medication such as warfarin, have a bleeding disorder, are preparing for surgery, or tend to have heavy menstrual bleeding, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. It is important not to exceed the suggested serving size. If you take any prescription medication or are managing a health condition, consult a practitioner first. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Mu Dan Pi (Paeonia Suffruticosa) Bark is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
