Mucous Membranes Support Alcohol-Free Drops

This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of three herbs extracted together in equal parts and taken by mouth: the ripe dark berry of the European elder, the intensely bitter root of the yellow gentian and the sour little sheep sorrel of fields and roadsides. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product - please read the safety information below before use.

  • Elderberry, ripe berry - Sambucus nigra berry (Adoxaceae)
  • Gentian, root - Gentiana lutea root (Gentianaceae)
  • Sheep sorrel, herb - Rumex acetosella herb (Polygonaceae)
  • Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite - liquid drops, for oral use. Other ingredients: vegetable glycerin, purified water
  • Origin: Responsibly sourced botanicals (gentian from France, sheep sorrel from Bulgaria). Gluten free. Made in the USA.

What is in the blend

  • Elderberry - the small, glossy, purple-black fruit of the European elder, a hedgerow shrub with flat heads of creamy flowers in early summer; the ripe berry, properly processed, is used. Elder leaves, bark and raw or unripe berries are not used in this product.
  • Gentian root - the thick yellow-brown root of a tall alpine plant with spires of yellow flowers, gathered in the mountains of France and central Europe; it is one of the most bitter substances in the plant world and the classic bitter of European tradition.
  • Sheep sorrel - a small, creeping wild sorrel with arrow-shaped, sour-tasting leaves and reddish flower spikes, a common weed of poor soils; it belongs to the buckwheat family and, like spinach and rhubarb, contains oxalates.

Why the alcohol-free drops

The three dried herbs are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste that softens the bitterness of gentian.

What is a glycerite?

A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the herbs. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.

How to use

Take by mouth only. Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Use it in short courses rather than continuously. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.

Drops or tincture?

If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, the same three-herb blend is available as Mucous Membranes Support Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Important safety information - please read before use

This is an oral herbal product. Two of its herbs have specific cautions. Please read before use.

  • Stomach: gentian is a strong bitter that increases stomach acid. Do not use if you have a stomach or duodenal ulcer, gastritis or acid reflux.
  • Kidneys and gout: sheep sorrel contains oxalates. Do not use if you have kidney stones, kidney disease or gout.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
  • Autoimmune conditions and immune-suppressing medication: consult your doctor before using elderberry.
  • Blood pressure: high doses of gentian may raise blood pressure - use caution if you have high blood pressure.
  • Diuretics and potassium: sheep sorrel may increase potassium loss - consult your doctor if you take diuretics.
  • Duration: sheep sorrel contains anthraquinones - use in short courses only, not continuously.
  • See a doctor: persistent symptoms, fever or facial pain need a medical evaluation. Do not use this blend instead of one, or instead of any prescribed treatment.
  • Allergies: sheep sorrel is a buckwheat-family (Polygonaceae) plant; elder belongs to the moschatel family (Adoxaceae); gentian to the gentian family (Gentianaceae).
  • Age: not for children.
  • If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Mucous Membranes Support Alcohol-Free Drops?
Mucous Membranes Support is a three-herb liquid blend: elderberry (Sambucus nigra, the ripe berry), gentian root (Gentiana lutea) and sheep sorrel herb (Rumex acetosella), extracted together in equal parts in vegetable glycerin and purified water, with no alcohol. Elderberry is the dark fruit of the European elder, gentian the intensely bitter root of an alpine plant, and sheep sorrel a small sour-leaved weed of fields and roadsides; each is also sold on its own. It is an herbal glycerite taken by mouth, not a capsule and not a nasal product. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free drops and the tincture?
Both contain the same three herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. These drops are a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water - no alcohol, a milder and naturally sweet taste that softens the bitterness of gentian, best kept refrigerated after opening. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
Is this elder berry or elder leaf? Why is gentian so bitter?
This blend uses the ripe elderberry, properly processed; elder leaves, bark and raw or unripe berries contain cyanogenic compounds and are not used in this product. Gentian root is one of the most bitter substances known in the plant world - the bitterness is natural and expected, which is also why the safety note advises people with a stomach ulcer or reflux to avoid it. Sheep sorrel (Rumex acetosella) is the small wild sorrel, a relative of the larger garden sorrel; like spinach and rhubarb it contains oxalates. All three herbs are also available as single extracts.
