Most people know patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) as the ever popular incense scent from the Sixties, when it seemed to be every flower child's favorite perfume. The scent has a reputation as an aphrodisiac, and is said to attract the opposite sex. It's slightly musty, pungent smell is unmistakable and pervasive, and it was often used as a fixative for other scents, or to mask more objectionable scents. Most people, however, are not aware of the other uses of patchouli. The furry-leafed shrub grows to about four feet in its native Malaysia, but can be grown as a houseplant throughout the world if you avoid the cold.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Patchouli Extract
What is Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) leaf extract?
Patchouli is a liquid extract of the dried leaf of Pogostemon cablin, an aromatic herb of the mint family (Lamiaceae), known in traditional Chinese herbalism as Guang Huo Xiang. It is the same plant famous for its distinctive scent, but this product is a LEAF extract meant to be taken internally by the drop - it is not patchouli essential oil (see below). This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol at 48% by volume. It is a whole-leaf liquid extract carrying the leaf's natural aromatic constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product. The raw material is responsibly sourced from India (patchouli is a cultivated crop) and each batch is gluten free. Patchouli leaf has a long history of dietary, aromatic and herbal use; please see the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Pogostemon cablin leaf; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical.
Is this patchouli essential oil?
No. This is a liquid extract of the patchouli LEAF (the herb, Guang Huo Xiang), meant to be taken internally by the drop. It is not patchouli essential oil. Patchouli essential oil is the concentrated, distilled volatile oil of the same plant, and it is used for perfume, incense, cosmetics and aromatherapy - it is a scent and topical product and is not meant to be swallowed. Our product is the alcohol-and-glycerin extract of the dried leaf, the form used in traditional herbal preparations such as the Chinese formula Huoxiang Zhengqi. So although both come from Pogostemon cablin, they are different products for different uses: the essential oil is for fragrance and external use, while this leaf extract is an ingestible herbal supplement. A related naming note: the true patchouli here, Pogostemon cablin or Guang Huo Xiang, is distinct from Agastache rugosa, another mint sometimes called Huo Xiang.
How do I use Patchouli leaf liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to three times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Patchouli has a distinctive aromatic, slightly musty and pungent character that many people prefer to mix into juice. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and see the safety notes below. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Patchouli leaf extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Patchouli leaf (Guang Huo Xiang) has a long history of dietary, aromatic and herbal use and no significant toxicity has been reported at standard doses, so it is considered low in toxicity as an ingestible herb; still, keep to the suggested serving and use it short-term rather than continuously. One important point: this is the LEAF extract for internal use, which is different from patchouli essential oil - essential oil is a concentrated distilled product intended for fragrance and external use, not for swallowing, so do not substitute one for the other. Avoid use during pregnancy and nursing, as data is limited. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains 48% alcohol by volume and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Our Patchouli (Pogostemon Cablin) Leaf is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
